Hair Length Guide
Length names get thrown around a lot, so here is roughly what each one means.
| Length | Where it falls |
|---|---|
| Pixie | Cropped, from above the ears to the nape |
| Bob | Chin to jaw |
| Lob (long bob) | Around the collarbone |
| Mid-length | Shoulders to a few inches below |
| Long | Mid-back and beyond |

Hair Type and Texture
Most hair falls into one of four types, with A, B, and C marking how fine or coarse the pattern runs.
- Type 1 is straight (1A fine and flat, up to 1C coarse with a little body)
- Type 2 is wavy (2A loose waves through 2C defined, thicker waves)
- Type 3 is curly (3A loose loops through 3C tight, springy curls)
- Type 4 is coily (4A soft coils through 4C tightly packed, zigzag texture)
Knowing your type makes product and cut choices far easier. See styles for yours under Hair Type and Texture.
Face Shape Guide
Your face shape is one of the best clues to a flattering cut.
- Oval works with almost anything, so it comes down to your taste
- Round is balanced by height at the crown and longer layers
- Square softens with waves and pieces around the face
- Heart is flattered by chin-length and longer styles that add width lower down
- Long or oblong looks great with volume at the sides and softer bangs

Hair Color Levels
Colorists rate depth on a scale from 1 to 10. It helps to know the number when you are describing what you want.
| Level | Depth |
|---|---|
| 1–3 | Black to dark brown |
| 4–6 | Medium to light brown |
| 7–8 | Dark to medium blonde |
| 9–10 | Light to lightest blonde |
Undertone matters too. Warm shades pull gold, red, or copper, while cool shades lean ash or smoky. See more in Hair Color Ideas.

Trusted Sources
For anything touching hair loss, scalp conditions, or skin health, it is worth reading medical guidance from qualified professionals. The American Academy of Dermatology is a solid place to start, and it is always best to see a dermatologist for a concern specific to you.
How We Create Our Content
We aim to keep every article useful, easy to follow, and honest about what it is. Hairstyle ideas are for inspiration, and when a post covers facts about your hair or scalp, we research reliable sources rather than passing off personal opinion as professional advice. You can read more in our Editorial Policy and get to know the person behind the site on our About Us page.
